Common Question: “I am thinking about buying an iPhone in the near future, but I was wondering how many songs it can hold. What is the storage capacity of the Apple iPhone 3G model?” Here’s your answer:

It might hold 1,000 songs, or it might hold closer to 4,000. It depends on three things — (1) the length of the songs, (2) the amount of other “stuff” you have stored on your phone, and (3) the iPhone model you choose.

The Length of Songs

Every song is a different length, so they take up different amounts of space in your phone’s memory. The last part of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony could be purchased as one song, but it’s something like 15 minutes long (3 x longer than the average song). Most people use three minutes as an average song length. Using that standard, I would estimate that your iPhone could hold anywhere from 1,000 – 4,000 songs, depending on the model you choose and the amount of other media (apps, videos) you have stored.

Other iPhone Apps and Media

It also depends on what else you have stored on the phone. Do you have a lot of apps and videos and such? If so, you won’t be able to get as many songs on the iPhone 3G, because you’ll be eating up storage space with those other things.

With that being said, the iPhone 3G has an 8-gigabyte (8GB) flash drive, so there’s plenty of storage space for songs and other items. But like any electronic device, that space is limited. Furthermore, if you ever push the limits by downloading a huge library of songs, you will sacrifice some performance. The more memory you use for storage, the less that will be available for running applications.

By the way, “3G” means third generation. It does not mean 3 gigabytes / GB. This is something that confuses a lot of people, so I wanted to point it out. The Apple iPhone 3G (third generation model) actually has 8GB (gigabytes) of memory space. Make sense?

The 3G vs. the 3GS

To make this question even harder to answer, Apple recently released the iPhone 3GS (recent at the time this article was published anyway). The newer model is said to be twice as fast as the earlier iPhone 3G model. You can buy the new model with either a 16GB or 32GB flash drive, compared to the 8GB drive in the regular 3G model. This means the newer model (3GS) can hold a lot more songs than the earlier model.

Help. My iPod nano has frozen up, and I can’t get it to work again. I push the buttons but it won’t respond. What should I do? How do I unfreeze my nano and get it working again?

This is one of the most common questions people send to us. In fact, our last article was about frozen iPhones, so it seems to be a common problem for various Apple products. To be fair, most electronics devices as complex as the iPod will freeze up once in a while. It happens. So, what do you do when it happens to your nano? How can you reset / unfreeze your “paralyzed” iPod nano and get back to your music? Here’s how to do it.

Unfreeze / Reset Your iPod

We have consulted the nano gods (i.e., read the user manual) to come up with the following steps for success:

As with a computer, the easiest way to unfreeze your nano is by restarting it. This if also referred to as “rebooting” the device. This will fix most of the common glitches associated with iPod devices.

“But how do I turn my nano off when it’s frozen and won’t respond?” Good question. Here’s what you need to do…

Make sure the “hold” switch is set to the unlocked position. It only has two positions, so this should be pretty straightforward. Just slide the switch away from the headphone jack, so that the orange disappears. I repeat — you should not see any orange. Once you have done this, you can move on to the next step.

Next, you would press and hold the “Select” and “Menu” buttons, simultaneously. The “Menu” button is clearly labeled and easy to find. The “Select” button is the center button. You need to press both of them at the same time, and hold them for about 10 seconds (until the nano unfreezes / resets).

After a few seconds of holding the buttons, the Apple logo should appear on your device. This tells you that it’s about to reset itself. If you get the logo, you should be all set. Yay!

The steps outlined above will unfreeze a frozen iPod nano about 90% of the time. If this does not work for you, then you should visit the nano support section of the Apple website for more information. Or else use the device as a paperweight.

Big Fat Disclaimer: These are the same steps recommended by the user manual that should have come with your iPod. I do not recommend using any other steps than those outlined above, nor do I recommend that you try to “rig” your nano because your buddy told you to. If you do this, you could void the warranty. If you slip into a fit of rage and throw your iPod against a wall, I am not responsible for any damages.

This article explains how to reset or unfreeze an iPod nano properly. We have dozens of other tips and tutorials on this website, as well. Remember, when in doubt refer to your user manual. If you do not have one, you can download the manual in PDF format from the Apple website.

Your iPhone may occasionally become frozen, in the sense that it won’t respond to your commands. You push a button on the screen, and nothing happens. The screen is frozen and there’s nothing you can do.

Has this happened to your iPhone recently? If so, you are not alone. This has happened to me too. Below, you will find a list of the steps I took to fix the problem. These steps also match up with the advice given by Apple, in the troubleshooting section of their website.

Important note: Always consult your owner’s manual before troubleshooting your iPhone, whether it’s for a frozen screen or any other problem. And don’t do anything that would void your warranty.

How to Fix a Frozen iPhone

Here are the steps recommended by Apple to fix a frozen iPhone screen:

As with any computer or electronic device, you should first try to restart the device. Besides being the easiest troubleshooting technique, this will fix the majority of cases where the iPhone is frozen and won’t respond. It sounds simple, I know, but restarting your iPhone will correct many of the known issues associated with the device.

To turn the device off, you need to push (and hold) the sleep/wake button until the red slider shows up on your screen. Next, move the slider with your finger until the iPhone turns off — the screen will go dark when this happens.

Turn your iPhone back on by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button. Hold the button until the Apple logo appears on the screen, and then release.

This will fix the majority of cases where the iPhone screen is frozen and unresponsive. If it restarts but is still frozen, try holding down the Home button for about eight seconds. This should close down any applications that aren’t responding, which is usually what causes the screen to freeze up in the first place.

After closing down any applications (step 4), try to restart the iPhone again (step 2).

Did this fix the problem? If not, you may need to reset your device. To reset your iPhone, you will need to press the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time — and hold them for 10 seconds or more. Keep holding the buttons until the screen goes black. You may see a red “power off” slider while holding the buttons — that’s okay. Keep holding them until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

The steps listed above will fix the majority of cases where the iPhone screen is frozen up. If you are still having problems after performing these steps, try the following…

Is your iPhone screen still frozen at this point? If so, you are screwed! Just kidding. You might just need to remove some of the content that’s on your device. Did this fix your frozen iPhone screen, or is it still acting up? Or, you might have to reset all of the settings for your device (different from the reset process in step 6). To do this, tap “settings” on your screen … then “general” … then “reset” … and then “reset all settings.”

Lastly, you might also want to restore your iPhone through your iTunes program. To do this, connect your phone to iTunes through your computer, and then click on “Restore” in the summary area.

If you are still having trouble after all of this, it’s probably time to contact an Apple expert for assistance. Hopefully, the steps I’ve outlined above will fix the problem for you, and you’ll never have a frozen iPhone screen again. We can at least hope for a perfect world, right? Good luck.

In this iPod instruction sheet, you’ll learn how to perform one of the most important actions needed to enjoy your device.

You’ll learn how to download music to your iPod device. After all, you can’t really enjoy your new acquisition until you load it up with your favorite tunes, right? Right!

So let’s talk about how to download tunes on your iPod. The main concept you should take away from this lesson is that your iTunes program serves as a portal between various music sources and your iPod device. You can download and import music in a variety of ways, but it must go through iTunes before you can download it to your iPod.

Downloading Music to the iPod

The first thing you need to do is download the iTunes program and install it onto your computer. You can think of iTunes as “music central.” This is the program you’ll use to download and organize your music, and then transfer it onto your iPod device. Best of all, it’s free to download. Click here to get started.

Okay, so you’ve downloaded the iTunes program to your computer. Now what? How do you use it to download music to your iPod device? Next, you need to put music into iTunes. You can do this in two primary ways — purchase songs or albums through the iTunes store, or import music into iTunes from a CD or other storage device.

Once you start building your music library in iTunes, you’ll want to organize it into playlists. You can think of a playlist as a theme or category. For example, I’ve created a playlist for my iPod shuffle that contains workout music. My wife has more than a dozen playlists, with songs grouped into such categories as “dinner party” and “backyard party.” You get the idea.

So now you have iTunes set up on your computer, you’ve imported or downloaded music, and you’ve begun arranging the music into playlists. What’s next? Now comes the easy part. You simply plug your iPod into your computer using the cable that came with it. Then you would export one or more playlists on your iPod. Apple refers to this as the “sync” process. Step #5 explains how to do this.

With your device connected to your computer, and with iTunes open, perform the following steps. In In iTunes menu, choose “iPod classic” from the source list. Then select “sync music” and choose the playlists you want to download onto your iPod device and click “apply.”

So there you have it — how to download music to your iPod in five easy steps. Remember, iTunes is kind of like the middle man between other music sources and your iPod device. You can get music into your iTunes program in several different ways, but it has to go through there before it can be downloaded to your actual iPod. Spend some time getting to know your iTunes interface. Learn about playlists and how to organize them. Once you understand these simple concepts, you’ll be well on your way to iPod enjoyment.

Who are those cool iPod dancers with all the crazy moves? Apparently, this is a common question lately.

I know this because I do search engine research on a regular basis to help me identify popular ipod topics, and those dancers are high on the list. Each day, hundreds of people are using the search engines like Google to learn more about the iPod dancers in those commercials.

So I thought it would be helpful to compile various articles and blog posts about the iPod dancers and put them in one place for your convenience … right here on this page!

Are you fascinated by the iPod dancers you see in the Apple commercials? Do you have a quasi-crush on one of the dancers? Do you want to know who is behind the black silhouettes in the commercial? Here are your answers.

iPod Dancers – Before and After Photos

Apparently, Rocket Studio is the design firm behind the iPod dancer silhouettes that you see in the commercials, or at least some of them. On their website, they have some before and after photos of the original dancers and the silhouette versions you see in the commercial.

* Check it out at: www.rocketart.com

One of the Dancers Can’t Afford an iPod

I’m not sure that this is newsworthy in any sense of the word, but there was recently a lot of online buzz about one of the dancers in the iPod commercial (Mandy Coulton) being unable to afford an iPod. I found this bit of “news” all over the Web, but I could not track down the original story. Normally I would just say who cares? But I promised to post as much information as I could find about the iPod dancers and that includes this little tidbit. You can Google it to learn more, if you are intrigued.

Amateur Dance Videos Online

Yep, you guessed it. The dancers from the iPod commercials have inadvertently spawned an army of wannabe dancers. And you can find them all over YouTube and similar sites. Desparate for their 15 seconds of fame, these would-be iPod dancers film themselves dancing and post the video to social media sites like YouTube. Want to see the “best of the best” videos? Check out this story about the top ten iPod dance videos. at amateur iPod dancers?

An Ode to Yellow Girl

When I watch one of the more recent Apple commercials featuring the iPod dancers in all their glory, I am intrigued … transfixed … mesmerized by one of the dancers I refer to as “Yellow Girl.” So I have created a poem dedicated to her. It is aptly entitled Ode to Yellow Girl…

Oh Yellow Girl, your dancing is divine,
I wish that your ad spot aired all of the time.
Your hips are mind-blowing, your outline a gem,
Oh Yellow Girl, Yellow Girl, I give you a ten!
You haunt my dreams with your delectable groove,
At times, while watching, I feel I can’t move.
With hair so bouncy and spirit so free,
Oh Yellow Girl, Dancing Girl, the dancer for me.

More to follow. I’m taking a break for the moment but will be back soon to expand this compilation of iPod dancer facts and trivia!

The iPod Touch is one of Apple’s hot new products. It’s sort of like an iPhone, but without the phone part. In other words, it’s a handheld multimedia device you can use to play music, watch movies and surf the web.

Given the popularity of the device, it’s no wonder that iPod Touch tips and tricks are popular topics these days. After all, everybody who owns a Touch wants to know the best tips for getting the most out of their device.

Today’s Touch Tip – Customizing the Home Screen

In todays iPod Touch Tip we will talk about how to customize the main screen of your device. When you take your iPod Touch out of the box and power it up for the first time, you will notice that the home screen has a lot of icons on it. These icons represent the various features of the iPod Touch – web browsing, email, weather, music, etc.

You can customize the home screen of your iPod Touch in several ways. For one thing, you can rearrange the icons to put the ones you use most often at the top of the screen. To do this, you first need to open the editing feature for the Touch screen. You can do this by by touching and holding any icon on the main screen. When you see the icons begin to “wobble” back and forth, this means the home screen is ready for editing.

Remember, the trick here is to touch and hold an icon on the main screen of your iPod Touch … that’s how you “unlock” the icon editing features of your device.

Next, simply touch and hold the icon, and then drag it to where you want it on the Touch screen. This is a popular iPod Touch tip because it allows you to prioritize your icons based on the way you use the device.

Using this technique, you can rearrange icons, move certain icons to another home screen (you can have more than one), or delete the icons from the main screen altogether. Keep in mind that deleting icons from the home screen does not remove the program from your iPod Touch entirely … it just removes the icon. You can put the icon back onto the main screen at a later time if you wish. It’s similar to removing a shortcut icon from the desktop of your computer … it only removes the shortcut, not the program itself.

I hope these iPod Touch tips and tricks help you to get more enjoyment out of your device.

How do I use my iPod to its fullest potential? This is a common question among first-time iPod buyers, and with good reason. The iPod is an impressive piece of technology with many features and possibilities, so it’s only right to research how to use an iPod before buying one.

Our Mission – Helping You Use the iPod

The entire purposes of this website is to provide iPod instructions and tips to help people get more enjoyment from their iPod device. So if you’ve been wondering how to use an iPod for maximum enjoyment, this is a website worth digging into!

Let’s start with the basics of how to use an iPod once you purchase it. Then we will get into some finer details of using the iPod.

Choosing Your iPod

The first step, of course, is to choose the iPod model that best suits your needs. For example, if you want maximum storage capacity and features, then the iPod Classic is probably the best option. On the other hand, if you’re going to purchase an iPod device to take to the gym or jogging with you, then the iPod Shuffle is your best option.

So when choosing your iPod you’ll need to consider how you plan to use the iPod. Okay, so let’s assume you’ve purchased the iPod product of your choosing and now you are ready to use it. But how do you use it? Where do you even begin?

How to Use Your New iPod

Here’s the basic concept of how the iPod works. Regardless of what iPod model you are using, this is how the initial process will go.

First, you will want to set up an iTunes account and download it to your computer. This is where you will acquire and organize music on your computer (prior to transferring the music onto your iPod unit).

Next, you will want to begin creating a playlist. This is basically a “bucket” of songs that you will transfer onto your iPod as a unit. The iTunes program is pretty intuitive, but you may have to play around with it a bit to get the hang of things.

Ready to use your iPod now? Not quite. You will next want to read your iPod instructions to learn about transferring music onto it.

Here’s the best part. Basically, you will just plug your iPod into your computer using the interface cable that came with it, and iTunes does the rest. iTunes will recognize that you have plugged in your iPod device, and it will then ask what you want to do by way of onscreen prompts.

Lastly, you just select the playlist(s) you want to transfer onto your iPod, and tell iTunes to do it for you.

Obviously this is a simplified guide on how to use an iPod device. But it covers most of the basics. Aside from the instructions above, all you have to do is familiarize yourself with the iTunes program and your particular iPod product. After that, you are ready to use and enjoy your iPod unit!

The iPod is all about customization and individuality. After all, your iPod is a musical reflection of who you are. That’s what the “i” in iPod means.

That’s why a lot of people use iPod skins to further customize / personalize their iPod. If you are not familiar with iPod skins you are not alone. Many people don’t even know they exist. Basically, an iPod skin is a protective “wrap” for your iPod that offers both protection and design.

iPod skins come in a wide variety of colors and designs, and they can be purchased from most websites that sell other iPod accessories.

iStyles, for example, recently announced their new lineup of iPod shuffle skins — which, as you can infer, are iPod skins made especially for the Shuffle, the smallest member of the iPod family.

Apple recently announced the release of the iPod Radio Remote. This little accessory combines a wired remote control with a FM radio receiver. It works with the iPod nano and the most recent generation (fifth) of iPods.

The iPod Radio Remote is a convenient way for music lovers to control their iPod and add FM radio for a reasonable price point. Using the remote, you can skip tracks and adjust the volume of your iPod even when it’s in a pocket or backpack. It’s main feature — lets you and listen to FM radio stations while it displays station and song information on the iPod’s screen.

“The iPod Radio Remote combines two great features in one elegant product,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s iPod Marketing guy said recently. “The iPod Radio Remote is both the best remote control and the best FM radio listening experience for iPod.” If you search the Apple iPod store online, you will also find a couple of competitors that launched similar products ahead of Apple.

But I must admit, the Apple Radio Remote is a cleaner package. If you live in the city and get good FM reception, this is a nice little add-on. If you live in the burbs and are looking for great sound — similar to the quality that you get from your iPod, then forget about the iPod Radio Remote. Why, because it is like any other small FM radio, it needs a strong signal to give you decent sound.

But don’t give up, there is quite a lot happening in the real time audio market and you will have more choices in the coming months. There were several rumors in 2005 about Apple and satellite radio for instance. “The iPod is the biggest, baddest thing around and satellite radio is this small, cool device,” said Steve Mather, an analyst with Sander Morris Harris. “Put them together and it’s the ultimate.”

But there has been no evidence that such a dream machine is in the works. Earlier this year, Sirius Satellite Radio CEO Mel Karmazin said he had approached Steve Jobs, the chief of iPod maker Apple Computer, about a possible deal but said Jobs wasn’t interested.

Sirius didn’t sit on its butt. The created their first portable device called the S50, a small, sleek device used with a docking port in your car. It is like a TiVo for radio. It automatically stores music for later listening. You can schedule recordings from both music and talk stations (with a firmware upgrade), save favorite songs, and link up to a PC to load music files. But… you can’t see the song list for recorded music. The S50 is available only with a car kit and the controls are hard to use.

Not to be left out, XM recently unveiled a new satellite radio for spring ‘06. Like their initial radio, the new receiver will pick up satellite signals as you are walking around outside. No docking station is needed, which is a huge advantage over the Sirius S50. It also has 1 gigabyte of memory so that you can record 50 hours of radio play. Out doing the S50 — there are no restrictions on how or what you can record. In fact, XM has made it even easier to capture individual songs.

The new XM player also provides a “tag” feature that let’s you immediately purchase any song you hear from Napster’s online store. When you reconnect the player to your computer, you can get those MP3’s that you just purchased to create a mix of MP3’s and radio content on the player.

XM now appears to be ahead of Sirius and Apple in the radio wars. To prove it they announced the XM Passport, a small card that can be plugged in and out of future XM enabled devices. With the passport card, you need only buy one subscription to XM radio to power a number of satellite receivers; just plug in your passport card
